More secure

Making Reading town centre more secure is a key programme within the Reading BID.

  • Fund five full-time uniformed PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) jointly with  Thames Valley Police to patrol the Business Improvement District area to ensure our streets are safe for everyone to enjoy, day and night.
  • We provide manned CCTV cameras covering the area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The BID provides funding for one operative.
  • PCSOs to be a visible presence in the town centre with the specific aim of tackling aggressive begging and shoplifting through planned, high profile activities
  • Fund and adopt the Facewacth initiative to tackle pick-pocketing, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. This online reporting system provides CCTV images and case files directly to the Police from businesses.
  • The BID influences Police tasking meetings and represents town centre priorities relating to the direction of police resources
  • Support, promote and widen the 24-hour 'townsafe' link radio network
  • Work closely with partners including the Crime and Safety Partnership for Reading and the Reading BUisnesses against Crime Initiative
  • Bespoke website www.rguide.com promoting Reading's night-time offer and highlighting best safety practices
  • Night-time economy management through our work with the licensed trade, the police and the licensing authority.
  • Throughout the 2009-14 BID period, crime in Reading has fallen across most categories, although shoplifting remains an isue for the BID to address.

To ensure that the solutions proposed are making an effective contribition to town centre crime, there will be a review of the secure element of the BID proposal at the end of the first year.
