Clubs and Bars
Reading has a good mix of nightlife, mostly centred around the Friar Street/Gun Street parts of the town centre.
Friar Street Area
Friar Street is home to many of the nationally established brand names - Jongleurs/Bar Risa, Reflex (80's theme nights), O'Neills, The Walkabout (on Wiston Terrace), Pitcher and Piano, Yates', and Q. A recent opening is Muse - fully refitted and offering a relaxing environment for good food and drink. Revolution, the hip vodka bar, is nearby (on Station Road) next to Malmaison.
London Street / Gun Street
Reading legend the Purple Turtle has been on Gun Street for a couple of decades and is as popular as ever, with students and residents alike. Its newer neighbours, Zero Degrees and Sahara are also favourites with the after office crowds.
Travelling up to London Street you'll find another local landmark - the After Dark Club, which runs a variety of themed nights throughout the weekend.
The Oracle
The Oracle is the place to head for eating and drinking in some of the best known chains - Ha!Ha!, Giraffe, Las Iguanas, Slug and Lettuce and Old Orleans, to name but a few.
Cocktail Chic...
If you are seeking something a little more romantic, or just that little bit special, try the hidden garden at the back of Cerise in the Forbury Hotel. Malmaison is popular with its comfy, yet chic, atmosphere (and excellent wine list) and for cutting edge design and a comprehensive cocktail menu try penta hotel.
...And Proper Pubs
They are becoming harder and harder to find but Reading still has a few traditional pubs in the town centre, or on the edges of the town. The Sun on Castle Street, The Horn on St Mary's Butts, The Bugle on Friar Street and The Allied Arms also on St Mary's Butts, are a few of the most famous.
For real ale try The Hobgoblin on Broad Street.
